Our Name

Indian signal trees, or trail-marker trees, are hardwood trees found throughout North America that early Native Americans intentionally shaped with distinctive physical characteristics. Historians believe these trees helped guide others toward lakes and rivers or marked fertile hunting and fishing areas.

Rooted within the Chuckery Area of the Cascade Valley Park in the Summit County Metro Parks system, Northeast Ohio’s own 300-year-old Indian Signal Tree’s unique three-tonged structure is thought to have been created by Native Americans when the tree was a sapling to help guide travelers to a path to portage their canoes over land.
